About the Photographs
"ENCHIRIDION PERPETUA", 1995-present
A collection of 6"x13" archival inkjet prints inside a black leather and cloth file
This is an ongoing project incorporating 2 frames next to each other on a roll of film that I notice are either conceptually or visually related when studying the film after development. I am especially interested in the concepts of coincidence and chance in life. I shoot what attracts me by intuition, not form, hoping to capture the feeling of the moment and impart to the viewer a feeling of place and history rather than a document of the object or event. I use infrared film since it records light beyond the visible spectrum and I am attempting to record what I cannot see, but I feel, at the scene. It is a process of discovery. There is an element of detection in it. To discern the meaning of the image afterwards is part of my process. The titles are intentionally cryptic and provide clues to the meaning of the work. This encourages participation from the viewer who then become partners in the mystery.
My background as a painter and sculptor influences me to make environments for my photographs to "live in" as a group. In this case [no pun intended], a perpetual environment that I intend to add to infintely. I started this series as work prints in 1990, before digital photography offered the possibility of putting 2 images side by side easily. The concept of this project depends on the ability to see the 2 images next to each other on the film strip. When I first became intrigued with these pairs of images I made my prints in the enlarger with a custom negative carrier. For a grant application in 1995 I decided to make a formal project of it and drum scan the strips containing the pairs and make archival inkjet prints of the most successful ones. And so it continues to this day.
"THE WELL OF WYRD", 2002
Three 24x100" Archival Inkjet Prints installed as a full room Three Wall Mural
This panel shown on this website is one of three in a mural series entitled, "The Well of Wyrd". The mural is printed from one strip of solarized infrared 35mm film which shows no separation between the frames on the film and has not been collaged or manipulated digitally. The entire roll of film is divided into 3 parts, which comprises the series. The strips of film were scanned and digitally printed with archival inks on archival paper.
The series was shot in Sweden in September of 2002, on the island of Marstrand. The film was not intentionally solarized! So when viewing the film after development I was pleasantly surprised by the fantastic results. My friends last swim of summer in the North Sea was the magic moment in my photography sessions that trip and fate had stepped in to improve upon my visualization at the scene.
Inspired by these events, I named this piece in reference to Norse Mythology. Spá, a type of ancient Norse magic, is the art of determining law by intuition. This law is laid down by wyrd, or fate, by sisters called The Three Norns. The three sisters represent the past, present, and future and live in the Well of Wryd where the gods gather to hold their important meetings. This myth embodies the elements of time and intuition which are so important to my work.
