I will demonstrate ADOBE LIGHTROOM 2 in all classes and compare to ADOBE BRIDGE CS3 + ADOBE CAMERA RAW 4.5,
with advice on which programs work best for your needs and how to work in both programs seamlessly.
I am making big changes in my syllabi this FALL 2008.
The new syllabi are project/assignment based with artist examples. I have written a BRIEF SYNOPSIS of the classes below.
With the new changes in RAW, Lightroom, and Photoshop Smart Objects, there are loads of new and interesting ways to work.
I will ask all students to keep a photo journal to keep your eye sharp and keen through the term.
We will use these journals and the images and ideas you collect in them as reference for your projects.
Based on what you bring in, I will bring in work I feel you should each look at in response.
We need to have an image-based dialogue in class, not just learn techniques and software, as that informs the techniques to use!

DIGITAL IMAGING FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS: PHOTOSHOP II

The main focus of this course is mastering ADJUSTMENT LAYER MASKING, which means selections and masks. Using the gradient tool on a mask is one of the easiest ways to correct lighting issues or to edge burn. Using blending modes to reveal over and underexposed images with masking is the best way to reveal detail in highlights and shadows.
I find students need time with these techniques to bring their images to full potential and you need to work all the way through the workflow many times. So I concentrate on getting you from CAPTURE TO PRINT as efficiently as possible, while retaining the best image quality possible.
This is a FOUNDATION CLASS that is essential to all students. The adjustment brush in Lightroom does not replace the control and refinement that you have in Photoshop! The basic skills of adjustment layer masking, sharpening with smart filter masks, will build an excellent foundation to refine your images. Of course, we will print these out and critique the results!

DIGITAL IMAGING FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS: PHOTOSHOP III

This class teaches you LAYER MASKING skills. This is not just for making a fantasy composite photograph from 2 or more images, although that is a possibility. You use LAYER MASKS for traditional darkroom effects also. It does not have to look digital, but simply enable you to get more detail from the scene you captured. Your digital camera sensor has a limited range of contrast it can capture. Usually only 5 stops from highlight to shadow. So you may bracket your images to go beyond that and want to blend them into a HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE image. This can be done in several ways, all of which we will cover in this class.
LAYER MASKING is a mask on an image layer, not on an adjustment layer. It allows you to control many aspects in the image for both traditional darkroom effects and for fantastical effects that could not be created in camera. These can look realistic or not, depending on your style. We will cover all aspects of LAYER MASKING, both traditional and contemporary so you can have full control over the style and content in your images. Combining 2 completely different images takes more masking skill and and eye for what will work together than combining bracketed exposures. So we will start with bracketed exposures first.
Artist examples will be used throughout the course for inspiration. Students are encouraged to find sources and influences to inform their work during the term. Topics can be adjusted to suit the interests of the class. Working in Layers with Masks is the focus, but the final result is most important. So all ideas and projects should be brought to class for investigation and experimentation. Of course, we will print and critique too!

DIGITAL IMAGING FOR BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHERS

Black and White techniques have improved tremendously with the new tools in RAW, Lightroom, and CS3 in the last year. These combined with previous techniques and the improvements in Black and White paper choices make it an exciting time to work in Black and White.
Working with MASKING is the key to refining BW images beyond the basic conversions available to you in Lightroom or in one adjustment layer. So knowing MASKING before you come to this class is essential to get the most out of it.
I will teach you how to make a different conversion for different areas of your images. We will use at least 5 techniques for conversion so you will know which one is best for what contrast level or type of image you have.
Conversion from color to BW is just one of the topics we cover. Other topics include: scanning BW negs for best detail, toning and coloring for effect/mood, sharpening and filter techniques for grain/film effects, paper and printer choices for BW.
We will also cover DIGITAL INFRARED. I have several DIGITAL INFRARED CAMERAS for you to use during the class. And I have examples of infrared files which you can experiment with. Depending on the interest of the class we can experiment with pinhole lens caps and plastic camera effects also. I have all this equipment in the class and artist examples to clarify what each effects they produce.
We will print and critique, also! Students are encouraged to bring source and influence material to class to help me guide you to the best workflow for your desired result. It is a great class and we work hard!
